Empowering Young Minds: Keiki Labs' Contribution to the 2025 STARS Program

Keiki Labs is honored to have played a pivotal role in the 2025 STARS Program, a transformative week-long residential STEM experience for high school women interested in science, technology, and engineering, with a special focus on space exploration. Hosted by the Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems (PISCES) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, this program aimed to inspire and equip the next generation of female scientists and engineers.

Our Contribution

Introduction: A Journey into STEM

I began the workshop by sharing my personal journey—how my passion for chemistry, materials science, and entrepreneurship was born. This narrative set the tone for a workshop rooted in scientific curiosity, practical application, and mentorship.

Focus Topic: Ocean and Water Cycles — A Scientific Perspective

Living in Hawaiʻi, we are fortunate to have access to one of the most beautiful oceans on Earth. From the beach, it appears pristine and teeming with life. But is it truly healthy? Is it clean? Unfortunately, our oceans are under threat—affected by human activity. We explored the ocean’s vital roles, how it sustains life, and what we can do to protect it.

Part 1: The Ocean’s Critical Role

  • Lecture Segment: We discussed why the ocean is essential for life on Earth, covering topics such as oxygen production, food sources, water reservoirs, and climate regulation.

  • Deep Dive: Carbon Cycle & Human Impact: Using a presentation, we examined how human activities disturb the natural carbon cycle, leading to ocean acidification. We also conducted a hands-on activity demonstrating the effect of acid on calcium carbonate by dissolving eggshells in acetic acid.

Part 2: The Water Cycle

  • Overview & Importance: We discussed the limited availability of drinkable water (~1%) and explored where the rest resides—primarily in oceans and ice. The cycle: evaporation, condensation, precipitation—how water moves through Earth’s systems.

  • Water Purification & Filtration: We discussed the main filtration systems used in catchment areas and engaged students in designing and building their own water filters using provided materials, applying their understanding of filtration principles.

    • Filter Testing

Conclusion & Action: How Can We Protect Our Oceans?

We concluded by exploring actionable steps to protect our oceans, such as reducing plastic waste, supporting sustainable practices, participating in local conservation efforts, and staying informed to educate others.

Gratitude and Acknowledgments

We extend our heartfelt thanks to PISCES for organizing such an inspiring event. Your dedication to fostering a love for learning in young women is commendable. A special thank you to the participating families for their support and enthusiasm.

Looking Ahead

Reflecting on this enriching week, Keiki Labs is excited to continue offering engaging science activities that inspire curiosity and learning. Stay tuned for upcoming workshops, holiday camps, and community events designed to nurture a community of young science explorers. We believe that learning is most powerful when it’s fun, truthful, and safe—just like the spirit of the STARS Program.

Thank you for being part of our journey to inspire the next generation of thinkers, inventors, and dreamers through the joy of science!
