On May 7, 2025, Keiki Labs participated in Keonepoko Elementary School’s Science Night in Pāhoa, engaging over 250 students, parents, and teachers with interactive light science demonstrations.
Unveiling the Spectrum with a CD Spectrometer
We showcased how white light can be separated into its constituent colors using a CD spectrometer. Participants observed the spectrum produced when directing the spectrometer toward a light source, illustrating the diffraction of light through the CD’s grooves.
Exploring Light Addition with Primary Colors
Using red, green, and blue colored lights, we demonstrated additive color mixing. Attendees experimented with different combinations, learning how these primary colors combine to produce a range of other colors, including white light.
Investigating Color Filtering with Color Films
We demonstrated how specific colors can be blocked using color filters. By placing various colored films over light sources, participants observed how certain wavelengths are absorbed, altering the appearance of the light.
Fostering Curiosity and Engagement
Throughout the evening, the keiki eagerly engaged in each activity, asking insightful questions and sharing their observations. Their enthusiasm and curiosity were truly inspiring, embodying Keiki Labs’ mission to make science accessible, fun, and safe.
Gratitude and Acknowledgments
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff and administration of Keonepoko Elementary School for hosting such an inspiring event. Your dedication to fostering a love for learning in your students is commendable. A special thank you to the participating families and teachers for their support and enthusiasm.
Looking Ahead
Reflecting on this enlightening evening, Keiki Labs is excited to continue offering engaging science activities that inspire curiosity and learning. Stay tuned for upcoming workshops, summer camps, and community events designed to nurture a community of young science explorers. We believe that learning is most powerful when it’s fun, truthful, and safe—just like the spirit of Science Night at Keonepoko Elementary School.
Thank you for being part of our journey to inspire the next generation of thinkers, inventors, and dreamers through the joy of science!
